Excerpt from A Study of Colophony Resin: A Dissertation It must not be forgotten however, that other substances, such as terpenes and their oxidation products, ' are always present in rosin, and these might tend to reduce the carbon content of the whole. The first crystallizations of abietic acid will, moreover, contain a smaller percentage of carbon than than the pure product, and even a small quantity of impurity will reduce the percentage of this constituent. A sample of abietic acid, prepared by Maly's method, gave, after the second crystallization, the following result on combustion.
