This volume is the first to offer a comprehensive, research-based, multi-faceted look at issues in early algebra. In recent years, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics has recommended that algebra become a strand flowing throughout the K-12 curriculum, and the 2003 RAND Mathematics Study Panel has recommended that algebra be “the initial topical choice for focused and coordinated research and development [in K-12 mathematics].” This book provides a rationale for a stronger and more sustained approach to algebra in school, as well as concrete examples of how algebraic reasoning may be developed in the early grades. It is organized around three themes: The Nature of Early Algebra Students’ Capacity for Algebraic Thinking Issues of Implementation: Taking Early Algebra to the Classrooms. The contributors to this landmark volume have been at the forefront of an effort to integrate algebra into the existing early grades mathematics curriculum. They include scholars who have been developing the conceptual foundations for such changes as well as researchers and developers who have led empirical investigations in school settings. Algebra in the Early Grades aims to bridge the worlds of research, practice, design, and theory for educators, researchers, students, policy makers, and curriculum developers in mathematics education.

Give your students a foundation of algebra for math success – now and in the future! Students and teachers must become friendly with algebraic foundations, as they have increasingly become the gateway to careers in the STEM fields. Monica Neagoy empowers teachers to embrace algebra and connect it to higher math concepts, tuning you and your students to algebraic thinking, reasoning, and doing. You’ll discover: ?Four explorations to help you weave key algebraic ideas into everyday mathematics Step-by-step lessons from real classrooms that will guide you in teaching concepts and in establishing their relevance and applicability New methods that break down difficult algebraic concepts and build a critical foundation for higher math

Just like representations in everyday life, this book shows that representations are ubiquitous to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—the STEM disciplines.“Show Me What You Know” showcases research on representations across a range of STEM disciplines and ages—from children as young as 2 years of age to professional mathematicians. The text highlights the importance of paying close attention to learners’ interpretations and productions of different representations as a source of evidence for what learners understand, and another way for learners to “show us what they know.” The text is organized around four themes: appropriation of representations, making meaning, highlighting, and representations as scaffold and supports. Book Features: Focus on representations in specific STEM disciplines. An examination of how students across different ages engage with, produce, and use representations. Section reflections that serve to broaden our thinking about representations. Graphs, charts, and examples of students’ drawings. Contributors include David W. Carraher, Tina Grotzer, David Hammer, Richard Lehrer, Eduardo Martí, Ricardo Nemirovsky, Tracy Noble, Juan Ignacio Pozo, Leona Schauble, Analúcia D. Schliemann, Judah L. Schwartz, and Beth Warren. Bárbara M. Brizuela is an associate professor in the Department of Education at Tufts University. She is the author of Mathematical Development in Young Children: Exploring Notations. Brian E. Gravel is a lecturer and director of Elementary Education at Tufts University. “We are provided not only with valuable source material for future theoretical development, but with profound encouragement for teachers and researchers to pay close attention to representations as they are generated and interpreted by students.” —From the Foreword by Gerald A. Goldin

An update to the original 1992 publication, this two-volume set unites current research to provide new conceptualizations of research problems, and to suggest possible research programs to move the field forward. In studying the existing research, the authors found that the community has maintained its focus on problems of learning, teaching, teacher education, assessment, technology, and social and cultural aspects of mathematics education, while some new areas of interest have emerged or been expanded. This set allows educators to step back and look at each of these areas to see where mathematics education research has been and where it should be going to enable the field to answer the questions about education that practitioners, policy makers, and politicians are asking.

The monograph series is published by NCTM as a supplement to the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME). Each monograph has a single theme related to the learning or teaching of mathematics. Number 11 in the JRME monograph series, this monograph attempts to clarify what we mean by everyday and academic mathematics, to provide empirical analyses of what happens when we bring particular aspects of everyday practises into classrooms and to consider how workplace practises relate to school mathematics.
