"First published in 1962 and based on a series of lectures from 1956, Milton Friedman's Capitalism and Freedom provides the definitive statement of an immensely influential economic philosophy-one in which competitive capitalism serves as both a device for achieving economic freedom and a necessary condition for political freedom. In short, the book asks: how can we benefit from the promise of government while avoiding the threat it poses to individual freedom? The result is an accessible text that was selected by the Times Literary Supplement as one of the "hundred most influential books since the war." Enduring in its impact and esteem, the book has sold well over half a million copies in English, has been translated into eighteen languages, and continues to profoundly inform economic thinking and policymaking. This edition includes prefaces written by Friedman for both the 1982 and 2002 reissues of the book, as well as a new foreword by Binyamin Appelbaum, economics editor for the New York Times and author of The Economists' Hour: False Prophets, Free Markets, and the Fracture of Society (Little, Brown, 2019)"--

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, University of applied sciences, Gütersloh, language: English, abstract: “Without the freedom to make mistakes, people cannot learn to take control of their lives successfully.” These are the words of Guy Standing, a British economist and cofounder of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN). The BIEN aims to inform people about what unconditional basic income (UBI) really is and how it works, based on scientific researches. But what is the connection between a successful life, making mistakes and the UBI? Humans often assume, that unemployed people, for example are lazy or less intelligent. To confirm these prejudices, it is blamed that everyone has the same opportunities. Unemployed people just do not take these opportunities. Nevertheless, life experience, education and social skills are not given by nature. Money is essential. People must pay for nearly everything that develops a personality or leads to equal chances. Making mistakes and learning from it is one part of this development, although not everyone has the financial space to try things and make mistakes. The money that someone owns depends on the income that this person has. To earn money normally a job is needed, but getting a job depends exactly on the things, that make out a personality. To develop this personality money is needed. It is like a vicious circle that cannot be broken. That is the moment, when the UBI comes into the picture. [...]

Though active in the arts herself, Dr. Richards (psychology, Saybrook Graduate School, San Francisco; psychiatry, Harvard Medical School; McLean Hospital, Belmont, Massachusetts) views creativity more broadly and as essential to survival. As someone who helped break new ground in the assessment of creativity in the general population, she introduces 13 chapters in which interdisciplinary thinkers probe the "originality of everyday life" in individual and societal contexts. Perspectives range from Piaget's developmental stages and the more positive aspects of television viewing to chaos theory and Zen Buddhism. In integrating these views, the editor enumerates the benefits of living creatively.

Revised and updated, the fifth edition of this now standard two-volume anthology brings together some of the most historically significant writings in American intellectual history. Uniquely comprehensive, The American Intellectual Tradition includes classic works in philosophy, religion, social theory, political thought, economics, psychology, and cultural and literary criticism. Organized chronologically into thematic sections, the two volumes trace the evolution of intellectual writing and thinking from its origins in Puritan beliefs to the most recent essays on diversity and postmodernity. Pedagogical features include introductions and headnotes to the selections, updated bibliographic material throughout, and detailed chronologies at the end of each book. Addressing such highly contested subjects as race, class, gender, aesthetics, political religion, and the role of the United States in the world, The American Intellectual Tradition, Fifth Edition, is invaluable for undergraduate courses in intellectual history. It is also an excellent supplement for graduate seminars and classes in American history, American studies, and American literature. Volumes I and II now offer new selections from Roger Williams, John Humphrey Noyes, Asa Gray, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Charles Augustus Briggs, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Walter Lippmann, Thurman Arnold, Henry Luce, Henry A. Wallace, Albert Einstein, Aldo Leopold, James Baldwin, George Kennan, Milton Friedman, Herbert Marcuse, Edward Said, Gloria Anzaldua, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Joan W. Scott, Samuel Huntington, and Carl Sagan. --Publisher description.

At a time when democracy in America suffers from a profound sense of cynicism, lack of trust, and disengagement, especially among young adults, this book is a much needed antidote. Here are original essays by some of the most distinguished and insightful political thinkers of our time. No armchair observers, they have advised presidents, been public servants, testified before Congress, helped other countries draft constitutions, worked as journalists, and won teaching awards. They participate ardently in the polity and civil society they write about here. The main focus of the essays is what role universities might be able to play in reviving a sense of citizenship and civic responsibility in our society. They represent different perspectives and differing opinions, making this a rich stimulus for discussion and action. At stake is nothing less than the future strength of democracy in the United States.

"This collection provides original and often counter-intuitive insights into central issues facing public institutions, particularly universities, in a globalizing and increasingly knowledge-based economy. It is almost head-spinning in its challenges to prevailing orthodoxies from across the intellectual spectrum, and the capacity to crash-merge ideas that have traditionally inhabited distinct realms to generate original knowledge syntheses." What is the future for the Bible, one of the most important books in the world? In this manifesto, Roland Boer explores the idea that the Bible is an unruly and uncontrollable text that has been colonized by church, synagogue, and state. Powerfully argues that the Bible needs to be rescued from its abuse by the religious and political right Considers the history of revolutionary readings of the Bible, from Gerrard Winstanley to the present Urges a role for the Bible in a new "worldly left": an alliance between the religious and secular left that can promote more progressive readings of the text Concludes by offering a "political myth" from the Bible that condemns oppression, imagines a better society and celebrates the biblical themes of opposition and chaos.
