Abraham's servant rejoiced after God led him to Isaac's wife Rebekah: I being in the way, theLord led me to the house of my master's brethren. Roy Blackwood's mother died at the age of three. As a child, he was frequently "getting in the way." Roy's Aunt left her career in teaching and dedicated her life to rearing Roy. She taught Roy how to "get in the way of the Lord" much like Abraham's servant did. One way she taught Roy how to get in the way of God was through the memorization of chapters from the Bible. One chapter Roy learned as a child was Psalm 19: "The heavens declare the glory of God." During World War II, Roy was the navigator on an air craft carrier, Petrof Bay. Using only the stars to navigate, Roy grew to understand Psalm 19 better. Petrof Bay saw significant action during World War II. The carrier supported U.S. forces during the securing of Okinawa and dodged kamikaze pilots throughout the war. During Roy Blackwood's last year of college, he realized he needed to listen to God in the same way he listened to his captain in the Navy as he navigated Petrof Bay. Through God's work in Roy's heart, he gradually came to want whatever Christ most wanted as opposed to what he wanted. During Roy's time as pastor of the Second Reformed Presbyterian Church, God used the church to plant many other churches. Yet, Roy never planned for any of the multiplication which showed him clearly how it was God's doing. Roy continues to give any credit for church growth to God and says in much the same way Abraham's servant said, "I being in the way, the Lord led me.""

This voluminous work on Church History by Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was originally published between 1858 and 1893 in eight volumes in the USA and covers the period from the beginnings of Biblical Christianity in A.D. 1 to the History of the Reformation in Germany and Switzerland (1517-1648). Being still a popular text in North America, this work had been out of print for over a century and has now been carefully edited and reformatted for republication in three volumes, each of them containing the text of two volumes of the original edition. Schaff’s work, unlike other works in the field, covers a multitude of church history-related aspects – from church doctrine, policy, events and processes to aspects of social moral and family life, arts and more. It is a very comprehensive text, extremely well-written and readable, rich in material and sources used, and attests to the excellence of protestant German theological scholarship under the influence of emerging Historical-Critical Biblical Exegesis at his time. This second volume covers the period from the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers to Medieval Christianity (A. D. 311-1073).

The word 'church' does not refer to a building or an organization, but to a people who understand their identity in Christ. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus basically said that, "...you are 'peteros' (speaking of a rock-splinter or a small piece of rock, which comes from a bigger rock 'petra') and upon this 'petra', upon this revelation of who I am and who you are; upon this revelation of My true identity and your true identity revealed, I will build My 'CHURCH', My 'EKKLESIA', My people who know and believe their identity revealed in Me, and the gates of hades, spiritual strongholds of ignorance and blindness, the very forces of darkness itself, will not prevail against them!" When I discover Jesus for who He really is, He shows me who I really am. I am no longer a simion - like a reed, you know, just following and leaning towards whatever direction the wind is blowing. No, He shows me my true identity. He makes me a petros - a rock. Steadfast and immovable, secure in that identity, in that image of me revealed in Him. And now Jesus says that "the gates of hell, the gates of hades; the resistance of the enemy to maintain his ground will not prevail against us!" That means that as we share these things with people, the enemy will not prevail in his efforts to keep them ignorant and deceived concerning their true identity revealed in Jesus!

Heaven and hell collide in the epic battle described in this book. What is the battle about? In the order of importance, it is first about the glory of our God, whose name is holy and faithful. He must be glorified, and every other thing is secondary. Secondly, His supernatural love has upgraded the fallen sons of Adam to a place of supreme importance. It is not only that their eternal peace is at stake, but also that He has attached His own name and glory to their redemption. What’s more, He invested everything—including His own life—to secure theirs, and yet, after all that divine investment, God left the execution and management of His great enterprise to the children of men so that men can reach men. If His people will take His business as seriously as He takes it and simply do what He tells them to do, they will reach their generation and the one after that. Through these divine illustrations and prophetic revelations, you can see how Satan works tirelessly to destroy men, women, and children—to take them with him to an eternal hell and rob God of His glory. See what our weapons are, how to fight Satan, and how to maintain the victory Jesus already purchased with His blood.
