“Catholicism takes a path less traveled in leading us to explore the faith through stories, biographies, and images.”—Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York What is Catholicism? A 2,000-year-old living tradition? A worldview? A way of life? A relationship? A mystery? In Catholicism Father Robert Barron examines all these questions and more, seeking to capture the body, heart and mind of the Catholic faith. Starting from the essential foundation of Jesus Christ’s incarnation, life, and teaching, Father Barron moves through the defining elements of Catholicism--from sacraments, worship, and prayer, to Mary, the Apostles, and Saints, to grace, salvation, heaven, and hell. Whether discussing Scripture or the rose window at Notre Dame, he uses his distinct and dynamic grasp of art, literature, architecture, personal stories, theology, philosophy, and history to present the Church to the world. Paired with his documentary film series of the same title, Catholicism is an intimate journey, capturing “The Catholic Thing” in all its depth and beauty. Eclectic, unique, and inspiring, Father Barron brings the faith to life for a new generation, in a style that is both faithful to timeless truths, while simultaneously speaking in the language of contemporary life.

In 2016, my husband Alan McAnespie and I, Olga Collis-McAnespie, began an extraordinary journey when we decided to compile my family tree, a promise I had made to myself when I was young. My Aboriginal heart is criss-crossed with Muruwari, Guwamu/Kooma bloodlines. The journey, starting with my family, soon found 143 surnames, 772 individuals and 7 generations - all linked by traditional tribal bloodlines.Working mostly with word-of-mouth information from the families that we tracked down, we built a substantial database that turned into this book.During our research, we came across heart-warming and yet sad incidents that gave perspective to the hard and the happy times our families have journeyed since the 19th century to the present. We witnessed a yearning to reconnect our families, as in the ancient times. My kaya (mother) and my yapu (father) were married on the 18th April 1929 at Angledool NSW and it is my belief that they were relocated from Angledool to Brewarrina in 1936 due to poor living conditions in the mission community. (Ref: NSW Aboriginal Protection Board Records year ended June 30th, 1936) It seems ironic that a resurgence of Aboriginal languages is currently being encouraged in the nation. I remember the ever-present sadness that burdened my parents because the government prohibited the use of their yaan, their mother-tongue and traditional ways. Most of the old language was lost or forgotten. But not all. We included some of these words in our work. Our kapal-kapal (old people's) memories hold strong stories in their own language. Let's hope that our stories will never be lost again. We trust that when people hold this book in their hand, they will cherish this living history that informs and empowers our Family Tree branches - to look with hope for the future.

The red-and-white transport vehicle pulls away from the curb at the medical center. With a heavy sigh, I shift my Chevy into drive and fall in behind while contemplating the task of getting to know the ins and outs of yet another health care institution. Each place has its own particular power structure, and it will be in the best interest of the patient if I quickly learn the next prevailing protocol. Who will answer questions, be accountable, and take appropriate action? Who will be kind when no one is looking; who will not? I dread the role of being a watchdog. Only the top of the passenger’s head above the wheelchair can be seen through the van’s back window. My mother is being moved to a nursing home today. I have tried my best to match wits with the pitfalls of dementia. I have failed. Dementia is a thief in the night that robs a patient’s memory bank while bequeathing a siege of unforgettable images in the mind of the caregiver. For the author, a brief phone call was more than an interruption to business as usual; it was an omen of change. Her predictable life was about to become an emotional roller coaster ride marked with heartwrenching twists and turns, breathtaking highs and lows, and unmistakable encounters with grace.

“A beautiful, intricate meditation on creativity and discovery, on fire and rebirth.” —Elizabeth Gilbert Awestruck at the sight of a Grinling Gibbons carving in a London church, David Esterly chose to dedicate his life to woodcarving—its physical rhythms, intricate beauty, and intellectual demands. Forty years later, he is the foremost practitioner of Gibbons’s forgotten technique, which revolutionized ornamental sculpture in the late 1600s with its spectacular cascades of flowers, fruits, and foliage. After a disastrous fire at Henry VIII’s Hampton Court Palace, Esterly was asked to replace the Gibbons masterpiece destroyed by the flames. It turned out to be the most challenging year in Esterly’s life, forcing him to question his abilities and delve deeply into what it means to make a thing well. Written with a philosopher’s intellect and a poet’s grace, The Lost Carving explores the connection between creativity and physical work and illuminates the passionate pursuit of a vocation that unites head and hand and heart.
