Western civilization was in it's childhood when the Vikings roamed throughout northern Europe and beyond. In many ways they represented the rashness of youth in the bodies of men. For every terrible vice, they had an heroic virtue; and both are represented in this novel. A young English noble is captured by a Danish raiding party and sold into the service of Leif, a guardsman of the famous King Olaf Trygvasson. The boy grows into manhood as a Viking, yet still sees their culture through English eyes. We follow his saga through numerous fights and multiple adventures-including an expedition to the North American continent. It's a story you won't want to put down.

Complete with biographies of Erik the Red and Leif Ericsson, this volume also features tales of famous Vikings after the title explorers' conquests. Erik the Red, born Erik Thorvaldsson in 950 AD, was a fearless Viking best remembered for founding the first Norse settlement in Greenland. Born to a father convicted of manslaughter, Erik the Red spent most of his childhood in exile in Northwestern Iceland. Perhaps following in his father's footsteps, Erik was convicted for "mysterious killings" and forced out of Iceland in 982. After making a home for himself and his family, Erik went back to Iceland to retrieve them, but was unable to locate their whereabouts. After a series of fights, Erik was deemed an outlaw and was unable to return to his wife and children, including his oldest son, Leif Ericsson, for some time.

Hold on to your Viking helmets as you learn about the first known European to set foot on North America in this exciting addition to the Who Was? series! Leif Erikson was born to be an explorer. His father, Erik the Red, had established the first European settlement in present-day Greenland, and although he didn't yet know it, Leif was destined to embark on an adventure of his own. The wise and striking Viking landed in the area known as Vinland almost five centuries before Christopher Columbus even set sail! "Leif the Lucky" and the other fierce, sea-fearing pirates were accomplished navigators who raided foreign lands for resources, hunted for their food, and passed down Old Norse myths from one generation to the next. This book gives readers a detailed account of what life was like during the time of the Vikings.
