If the past is indeed a foreign country, then how can we make sense of its richness and difference, without approaching it on our terms alone? 'Pre-histories' and 'afterlives', methods that have emerged in recent work by Terence Cave, offer new ways of shaping the stories we tell of the past and the analyses we offer. In this volume, distinguished contributors engage in a dialogue with these two new critical methods, exploring their uses in a range of contexts, disciplines, languages and periods. The contributors are Terence Cave, Marian Hobson, Anna Holland, Neil Kenny, Mary McKinley, Richard Scholar, Kate E. Tunstall, and Wes Williams.

Why does the position of the threshold exert such a compelling hold on our imaginative lives? Why is it a resonant space? Why is it so urgently the place of writing – the place where one may remain, avoid speaking or naming, yet speak from? Through a combination of case studies and theoretical investigations, this book addresses these questions and speaks to the imaginative power of the threshold as a productive space in literature and art.

Thinking with Literature

Thinking with Literature offers a succinct introduction to a cognitive literary criticsm, broad in scope but focusing on a particular cluster of approaches, it aims to induce a change of perspective in the reader.

To speak of 'thinking with literature' is to make the assumption that literature (in the broadest sense) is neither a side-show nor a side-issue in human cultures: it belongs to the spectrum of imaginative modes that includes both philosophical and scientific thought. Whether one regards it as a practice or as an archive, literature is highly pervasive, robust, enduring, and pregnant with values. Thinking with Literature argues that what it affords above all is a way of thinking, whether for writer, reader, or critic. Literature constitutes one of the prime instruments of cultural improvisation; it is the embodiment of a powerful, inventive, and ever-changing cognitive agency. As such, it invites a cognitive mode of criticism, one which asserts the priority of the individual literary work as a unique product of human cognition. In this book, discussions of topics, arguments, and hypotheses from the cognitive sciences, philosophy, and the theory of communication are woven into the fabric of a critical analysis which insists on the value of close reading: a poem by Yeats, a scene from Shakespeare, novels by Mme de Lafayette, Conrad, Frantzen, stories from Winnie-the-Pooh, and many others appear here on their own terms, with their own cognitive energies. Written in an accessible style, Thinking with Literature speaks both to mainstream readers of literature and to specialists in cognitive studies.

Terence Cave's work has made a major contribution to the rethinking of the relationship between literature, history and culture over the last half-century. Retrospectives brings together substantially revised versions of studies written since 1970: together they constitute a searching methodological investigation of the practice of reading past texts. How do our ways of reading such texts compare with those practised in the periods when they were written? How do we distinguish between what a text meant in its own time and what it has come to mean over time? And how might reading provide access to past experiences? The book's epicentre is early modern French culture, but it extends to that culture's ancient Greek and Roman models, its European contexts, and the afterlives of some of its themes, from Pascal via George Eliot to Angela Carter.

English summary: This volume contains significant published and unpublished essays written by the Judaism and New Testament scholar Friedrich Avemarie, who died unexpectedly in October 2012. Set against the background of an excellent knowledge of the rabbinic literature and with a decidedly theological interest in the New Testament, the contributions provide critical impulses for New Testament and Judaistic discourse. Key topics are the rabbinic theology of martyrdom, rabbinic and New Testament soteriology and anthropology, the parables of Jesus, the historical background of the Book of Acts, Paul's doctrine of justification in relation to the so-called New Perspective on Paul, the Israel question in the theology of Saint Paul, and questions about the history of salvation and the free will in Paul's gospel. Five of the essays are published here for the first time.
