At the time of writing (mid-October 1998) we can look back at what has been a very successful ECOOP’98. Despite the time of the year – in the middle of what is traditionally regarded as a holiday period – ECOOP'98 was a record breaker in terms of number of participants. Over 700 persons found their way to the campus of the Brussels Free University to participate in a wide range of activities. This 3rd ECOOP workshop reader reports on many of these activities. It contains a careful selection of the input and a cautious summary of the outcome for the numerous discussions that happened during the workshops, demonstrations and posters. As such, this book serves as an excellent snapshot of the state of the art in the field of object oriented programming. About the diversity of the submissions A workshop reader is, by its very nature, quite diverse in the topics covered as well as in the form of its contributions. This reader is not an exception to this rule: as editors we have given the respective organizers much freedom in their choice of presentation because we feel form follows content. This explains the diversity in the types of reports as well as in their lay out.

The core idea of this book is that object– oriented technology is a generic technology whose various technical aspects can be presented in a unified and consistent framework. This applies to both practical and formal aspects of object-oriented technology. Course tested in a variety of object-oriented courses, numerous examples, figures and exercises are presented in each chapter. The approach in this book is based on typed technologies, and the core notions fit mainstream object-oriented languages such as Java and C#. The book promotes object-oriented constraints (assertions), their specification and verification. Object-oriented constraints apply to specification and verification of object-oriented programs, specification of the object-oriented platform, more advanced concurrent models, database integrity constraints and object-oriented transactions, their specification and verification.

This book delivers the latest developments in object technology and their impact in computing systems re-engineering. Object-oriented programming is here shown to provide support for constructing large scale systems that are cheaply built and with reusable components, adaptable to changing requirements and use efficient and cost-effective techniques. Internationally recognised authorities from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the UK and the USA here record their research and development work on the industrial techniques and structured object-oriented methodologies in forward and reverse engineering of computing systems. This book takes stock of progress of that work showing its promise and feasibility, and how its structured technology can overcome the limitations of forward engineering methods used in industry. Forward methods are focused in the domain of reverse engineering to implement a high level of specification for existing software. The book contains the selected, quintessential content of the first UK Colloquium on Object Technology and Systems Re-Engineering held at Oxford University in 1998. The conference was sponsored by British Telecom Laboratories, EMSI limited and the OOSP Specialised Group of The British Computer Society. This year, for the eighth time, the European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP) series, in cooperation with Springer, is glad to o?er the object-oriented research community the ECOOP 2004 Workshop Reader, a compendium of workshop reports pertaining to the ECOOP 2004 conference, held in Oslo from June 15 to 19, 2004. ECOOP 2004 hosted 19 high-quality workshops covering a large spectrum of hot research topics. These workshops were chosen through a tight peer review process following a speci?c call for proposals ending on November 30, 2003. We are very grateful to the members of the Workshop Selection Committee for their careful reviews and hard work to put together the excellent workshop program. We also want to thank all submitters, accepted or not, to whom the workshop program equally owes its quality. This selection process was then followed by a selection of workshop participants, done by each team of organizers based on an open call for position papers. This participant selection process ensured that we gathered the most active researchers in each workshop research area, and therefore a fruitful working meeting. Following the tradition of the ECOOP Workshop Reader, we strove for hi- quality, value-adding and open-ended workshop reports. The result, as you can judgefromthefollowingpages,isathought-provokingsnapshotofthecurrent- searchinobject-orientation,fullofpointersforfurtherexplorationofthecovered topics. We want to thank our workshop organizers who, despite the additional burden, did a great job in putting together these reports.

This book is written for students and developers whowish to master the essential skills and techniques in applying the UML forsoftware development. The reader will learn object-oriented analysis, design andimplementation using appropriate UML models, process, techniques and tool.Accompanying the book is the Community Edition of Visual Pradigm for UML (VP-UML),an award-winning CASE tool, which allows the reader to put the theories learnedinto practice immediately. The authors propose a novel framework for modeling and analysis called the ViewAlignment Techniques (VAT) that helps software developers create developmentmethods. The Activity Analysis Approach (A3), which is particularlysuited for the development of interaction-intensive systems, is described. Theseconcepts have been well proven, as they were followed closely in the developmentof the VP-UML CASE tool.Three chapters in this book describe structural, use case and dynamic modelingand analysis techniques, together with practical tricks and tips that have beengained by the authors from many years of experience. Each of these threechapters includes a mini-case study which illustrates the unique "fromdiagram to code" concept in software development. In the final chapter, amajor case study is included to help the reader reinforce the theories learnedin previous chapters using VP-UML.The key areas in object-oriented technology covered in the book include:Requirements modeling using cases:Identifying, capturing and elaborating requirements.Domain analysis for object identification:Building structural models for objects and their attributes andrelationships.Dynamic analysis and design: Building dynamicmodels, refining structural models and making design decisions.Implementation: Translating UML models intocodes and implementations.Method creation and the framework of ViewAlignment Techniques: Choosing the right UML models and customizing theanalysis and design process.A case study: Showing how the ActivityAnalysis Approach is put into practice, using VP-UML.Additional material can be found at http://www.mcgraw-hill.com.sg/olc/tsang.Instructors will benefit from useful tools such as PowerPoint slides (passwordprotected) and answers to exercises (password protected), while students canobtain source code and additional exercises and test questions.Visual Paradigm for UML, the CASE tool used extensively in this book, washonored in the 15th Annual Software Development Magazine Jolt Productivity Awardin the Design and Analysis Tools category in March 2004. It has also recentlywon two more accolades: Oracle JDeveloper Extensions Developer of the Year 2004and Hong Kong Computer Society 6th IT Excellence Silver Award 2004. TheCommunity Edition of this CASE tool is included in this book to enable thereader to use its powerful and easy-to-use features for system modeling, analysis and implementation.

The continual evolution of object oriented technologies creates both opportunities and challenges. However, despite the growing popularity of object oriented technology, there are numerous issues that have contributed to its inability to firmly entrench itself and take over for the older, proven technologies. Object oriented technology's image problem has created a highly difficult decision making process for corporations considering widespread adoption of these technologies. Object Oriented Technologies: Opportunities and Challenges addresses concerns, opportunities and technology trends in the application of object oriented technologies. The chapters of this book were selected to represent a variety of perspectives concerning the present and future of this broad sub-field of software development.

'When do the Lebesgue-Bochner function spaces contain a copy or a complemented copy of any of the classical sequence spaces?' This problem and the analogous one for vector- valued continuous function spaces have attracted quite a lot of research activity in the last twenty-five years. The aim of this monograph is to give a detailed exposition of the answers to these questions, providing a unified and self-contained treatment. It presents a great number of results, methods and techniques, which are useful for any researcher in Banach spaces and, in general, in Functional Analysis. This book is written at a graduate student level, assuming the basics in Banach space theory.
