Philip de László (1869-1937) was the pre-eminent portrait artist working in Britain between 1907 and 1937. He painted nearly 3,000 portraits, including kings and queens, four American presidents and countless members of the European nobility. There has been no biography of him since 1939, and this new account of both his life and his work draws on previously untapped material from the family archive of over 15,000 documents. It establishes the intrinsic importance of his art and re-positions him alongside his great contemporaries John Singer Sargent, Sir John Lavery and Giovanni Boldini. Born into a humble family in Budapest in 1869 he was ennobled by the Emperor Franz Joseph and from 1912 became known as Philip de László. From an early age he was driven by an unshakable vocation to succeed as an artist. He studied in Budapest, Munich and Paris, soon turning to portraiture as his vocation, and in 1894 received his first important commission from the royal family of Bulgaria, followed in 1899 by the Emperor Franz Joseph and, in 1900, Pope Leo XIII.

Philip Alexius de Laszlo (1869-1937) was one of the most important portraitists of the early 20th century. Born in Hungary, he was trained in Munich and Paris and was soon receiving commissions from noble and royal families throughout Europe. Having married Lucy Guinness in 1900, in 1907 he moved from Vienna to England, where he had enormous success. Far less known are the wonderful portraits de Laszlo painted in the Netherlands over more than 30 years. By 1900 de Laszlo was renowned in the highest circles and his reputation inevitably reached the land of Rembrandt. De Laszszlo became very popular with Holland's cosmopolitan aristocratic and entrepreneurial families.Over the years, members of the Loudon and Deterding families, Cremer and Count Schimmelpenninck all sat to him. The portraits have remained in the families' private collections, and are here published for the first time. The book accompanies an exhibition of de Laszlo's Dutch portraits in the Van Loon house in the heart of Amsterdam, built in 1672, which was opened as a museum in 1973. It is a complete catalogue of de Laszlo's Dutch oeuvre as it is known today."

Was Philip de László a secret agent and was MI5’s source really as they claimed? Did an enemy spy really paint the portrait of the young Princess Elizabeth? In 1917, noted society portrait painter Philip de László, who painted such luminaries as the Pope, the Austrian emperor, King Edward VII and Prince Louis Battenberg, was subjected to a secret tribunal which interned him for trading with the enemy. At the outbreak of the First World War, de László had pulled strings to be naturalised as British, but in 1919 he was referred to a public committee to revoke his naturalisation. With the aid of skilled counsel, de László had the application overturned – however, newly discovered records show MI5 had evidence obtained from a top-secret source that alleged that he was supplying the enemy with important information on politics and industrial production. Crucially, the source’s anonymity prevented MI5 from presenting evidence to the tribunal, which has particular resonance in the contemporary War on Terror. In the only book to examine MI5’s secret evidence, Phil Tomaselli explores these allegations and reaches a shocking conclusion.

Philip de Laszlo (1869-1937), following a meteoric rise to recognition in his native Hungary, settled in Britain in 1907 and became its leading portrait-painter - taking over from Sargent. He painted not only crowned heads throughout Europe, but elected ones, too, and the rich and influential all over the Western world - he painted the present Queen Elizabeth as a girl, as well as the late Queen Mother and George VI; he painted four American Presidents (Roosevelt, Harding, Coolidge and Hoover); he painted Byngs, Balfours, Schroders, Mellons, Mountbattens, and many, many more. He was renowned for his unbeatable likenesses, his speed and directness, his talent for friendship. Dukes kept his portraits beside their Van Dycks and their Gainsboroughs, and thought he did well in their company. He was known especially as a portraitist of beautiful women (Elinor Glyn wanted him to paint her on a tiger skin), but his male portraits are also powerful and his talent was universal - including landscape, animal subjects and children, and drawings as well as oil paintings. Partly because ninety per cent of his works remain in private collections, partly owing to modernist politics and prejudice, de Laszlo's paintings are very little known. This book, the first devoted to the artist for more than thirty years, illustrates a rich and representative selection of his work, reproduced in new colour photographs. It charts his career from his first success with genre paintings in his native Hungary to his last commissions at the time of George VI's Coronation, including many of his most famous works.

His Royal Highness Prince Edward The Duke of Kent KG GCMG GCVO ADC(P), first cousin to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, has devoted his life to the service of his country. Even before he served twenty-one years as a regular soldier in the British Army, he was introduced to this life of service by his widowed mother, HRH Princess Marina, The Duchess of Kent, during an extensive tour of the Far East at the time of his seventeenth birthday. His interest in modern technology, especially computing and engineering, in issues of health, fitness and social welfare, and in the development of the intellect, has seen him become the patron, president or active member of more than one hundred charities and social organisations. His military service, and deep interest in military history, sees him making a particularly important contribution to many military-related organisations - the chief of which must be the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. At the time of his eightieth birthday on October 9, 2015, Prince Edward remains one of the busiest members of the royal family. This book is offered as a tribute to his life of service, and to the myriad organisations, large and small, local, national and international, that make up the fabric of the United Kingdom in the twenty-first century.

Kentucky. Known today for its bluegrass, horse racing, and bourbon; it’s very name, embedded in Iroquois history, means Land of Tomorrow. The song birds are the sweetest, thoroughbreds fleetest, wrote James Mulligan, “The landscape is the grandest--And politics—the damnedest In Kentucky.” It’s a hard look that we must face at European settlers, frightened by differences in heritage, religion, and skin, unable to respect the beauty in other races. They did not understand the sexual orientation of God’s creation. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," wrote George Santayana. We romanticize the old days maybe because they are behind us and can no longer harm us. And from the good that was there, we build a better tomorrow. Here are five historical dramas of Kentucky: The Botanic Garden Horace Holly arrives in Kentucky with dreams to create his own university which is deemed to be the Harvard of the West. The faculty he chooses includes an eccentric European botanist who believes that every great university must have its own botanical garden. Dreams collide within the struggles between religion, government, and ambition. A play about Constantine S. Rafinesque and Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. Sabbath of the Soul Three weary travelers meet one evening at a railroad station awaiting arrival of the train carrying the one person most influential to them. Remembrances of this one exceptional life help them come to terms with their own mortality and purpose. A play about the life of Emily H. Tubman and Frankfort, Kentucky. Emma of Elmwood An architect, hired to demolish and replace a beloved house, is haunted into rebuilding his own life. A play about Emma P. Watts and Eastern Kentucky University of Richmond, Kentucky. The Dust of Summer A woman imprisoned by her domestic life discovers a runaway soldier seeking refuge from himself, both trapped between courage and duty. A play about Pleasant View Farm and The Battle of Richmond in Madison County, Kentucky. The Two Villages After years of engagement and unable to set a date for a wedding, a struggling painter is confronted by his fiancé as they journey to understand the obstacles that have plagued their relationship. Being true to one’s art comes with a price. A play about Kentucky’s own impressionistic painter Paul Sawyer of Frankfort, Kentucky.
