Small Steps - Long Journey, is an autobiography novel that depicts my struggle to survive a nine-week coma and overcome the dependency of others. In August 1985, a drunk driver torpedoed through his red light and blasted into my smaller mini truck. Instantly, i fell comatose for nine weeks, but the real story is in my tenacity to overcome obstacles in my life that were not there before. As an athlete through school, I succumbed to a life far different than the playing field. Faced with difficulties that were taken for granted, suddenly my world became a battlefield just to survive. I take the reader on a voyage into the unknown disabled community, where I candidly express my emotions. The accident left me vulnerable, which allowed my father in close. We were both too stubborn to show weakness and that kept us apart. My hopes are to share my story and inspire those who are injured everyday, whether it is doctors & nurses or families & friends of those who recewive care. I take the reader on ajourney where hopefully you can find comfort in one persons survival.

As a common theme of the twenty-five short stories of Small Steps, lives are seen as being determined by these small steps. The collection encompasses happenings in different places and times, ranging from early nineteenth century Italy or America to contemporary accounts either in America or South America. Several present the many facets of love. In some cases, unusual responses of a man or a woman are guided by unexpected expressions of love. For example, a disturbed Viet Nam veteran after witnessing the birth of a girl becomes a hidden, one-man protection squad while she is growing up. He saves her from a number of situations including a kidnapping and possible murder. In another story, a girl is being trained as a trickster by her grandfather. In trying to con a young man she falls in love with him. Many other yarns have different twists and turns. Six are mystery/adventure stories having surprising denouements.

While previous reports have focused solely on the big issues like capital account convertibility, bank privatization, and priority sector norms, A Hundred Small Steps: Report of the Committee on Financial Sector Reforms goes deep into other areas where reforms are less controversial, but perhaps as important. The report argues that we need a change in mindset for the financial sector, one that recognizes that efficiency, innovation, and value for money are as important for the poor as they are for our new Indian multinationals, and these will come from improved governance, new entry and competition. Indeed the Committee believes that the road to making Mumbai an international financial centre runs through every village in India. The report is divided into separate self-contained chapters; the underlying theme behind all the proposals is the need to enhance inclusion, growth, and stability by allowing players more freedom, even while strengthening the financial and regulatory infrastructure. The role of the government is to create an enabling environment by building sound financial infrastructure. The Committee has focused primarily on broad principles and directions, without entering too much into details of implementation. It emphasizes three important reasons for financial sector reform: to include more Indians in the growth process; to foster growth itself; and to improve financial stability, flexibility, and resilience and thus protect the economy against the kind of turbulence that is affecting the world today. The Committee recognizes this is a difficult time to propose financial sector reforms in India. The near meltdown of the US financial sector seems to be proof that markets and competition do not work. This is clearly the wrong lesson to take from the debacle. The right lesson is that markets and institutions do succumb occasionally to excesses, which is why regulators have to be vigilant. The report argues for skilled regulators who encourage growth and innovation even while working harder to contain risks.

What is a sacred moment? Is it a big, sudden change in the direction of your life or your physical or mental state? Or is it a moment in which you understood your fears or made a choice to let something go? We may find our lives full of fear, hurt, or pain of loss, and even though these daily experiences have not caused major earthquakes or volcanic eruptions around the world, it is in these moments of our daily lives that we must look for our answers. In Small Steps, Huge Changes: The Extraordinary Moments of an Ordinary Life, writer Phyllis Reed shows us how it is possible to discover healing and joy by choosing to take just one small, courageous step. Through reflections, remembrances, poems, and vignettes, Reed tracks her own small steps through realms as varied as love, parenthood, loneliness, fear, and connecting to places, other people, and holy presence. Each true story, told in Reeds conversational, nurturing tone, is a tribute to those who have found ways to live happily and healthily after great difficultiesto see the extraordinary in their everyday experiences. Taken as a whole, these moments of rising and falling, of joy and defeat, become our sacred lives. Our sacred moments are our greatest gifts, and the choice is ours to step forward and accept and learn from them.

Each one of us learns in a different way. Traditional teaching approaches don't always suit the variety of different ways people learn-a conflict that can damage confidence and sometimes lead to failure. The key question that faces parents and teachers is how to help those who learn differently find long term success. In Small Steps, Big Differences: A Toolkit for Parents of Children Who Fall through the Cracks, author Hilary Craig challenges this question and offers parents strategies to help. The resources provided within this toolkit are framed around the core belief that all children can make progress, even if traditional learning and teaching methods in the classroom are inadequate for the way they learn. This toolkit provides support to those parents who recognize the unique abilities and talents in their children and who want practical tools to enable them to learn and succeed. Hilary Craig's experience, insight and strategies for helping children learn effectively, provide a valuable resource to accompany classroom learning. In this toolkit, she also addresses the four essential skills for effective learning: memory, listening, attention, and social skills; and strategies to develop each of these, with the final goal to build confidence. Small Steps, Big Differences is an invaluable resource for parents to help their children increase their chances for learning success.

This book intends to motivate non-regular readers to overcome previously held inhibitionsabout reading and not let past experiences keep them away from the gift of reading. There is a deliberate attempt at illustrating the book with plenty of illustrations to tempt word-phobic readers. It helps simplify the reading process and urges the reader through simple techniques to approach reading in a manner that enhances comprehension. This entails giving up some deeply entrenched old habits that are counterproductive and equipping ourselves with better skills. To achieve this, beyond just tips, the book also provides physical tools that help the reader overcome old habits like regression, lack of preview, subvocalizing, slow reading, and self-doubt. It also helps the reader to rise above the bare minimum reading limited to their subject and become flexible readers capable of changing gears when required. The benefits of being well read and being able to fight guilt are also highlighted with the intention that having completed this book urges the non- regular reader to continue in their quest of more fulfilling reading. This book intends to help people acquire an altered approach to reading so that parents and significant caretakers in the lives of young learners do not inadvertently demotivate budding readers. An investment of 100 minutes of your time could make a positive change in how you read and what you do hereafter.
