This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. M. R. James (1862-1936) redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichés of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings. However, James's protagonists and plots tend to reflect his own antiquarian interests. Accordingly, he is known as the originator of the "antiquarian ghost story". He was was a medievalist scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905–18), and of Eton College (1918–36). He is best remembered for his ghost stories, which are regarded as among the best in the genre. Poetry. "Open this exquisite volume, THE HAUNTINGS, and you'll find the same exacting attention to language and life that Gail Waldstein paid to the still bodies of children she examined for decades as a pediatric pathologist. What unifies her medical and poetical work is a deep awareness of how ephemeral and fragile our lives are. These poems connect, sometimes with haunted reflection and often with luminous joy, the many selves contained within the speaker: daughter, mother, lover, wife, doctor, grandmother, poet. They remind us that we are most beautiful when we are aware. As in Buddhist thought and practice: at first we know nothing; then we witness to understand; finally, we engage in loving action. These poems are forms of loving action. They are evocative and varied gifts we receive from the world."—Mauricio Kilwein Guevara

Prepare for a scare in America's oldest city As she walked to the end of the hall where the grandmother's bedroom was, she was startled to see the image of a religious figure wearing the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph. The nun was fingering rosary beads as she knelt by the elderly lady. As suddenly as the image appeared, it vanished from sight. * * * It wasn't the mysterious smells that put Minorcan Kenny Beeson over the edge. Nor was it the sounds of booted feet stamping across the floor or the ship's bell that rang when no one entered the shop door. No, it was when his friend died in the 1960s, and he couldn't banish the spirits from his shop. * * * Then he suddenly felt a chill. He shivered and looked at the lady. Her long skirt was blowing in the breeze and hanging fabric was flapping over the bushes. Garrett knew there was no wind stirring the air. Certain by then he was seeing a ghost, Garrett dropped his sack of garbage and backed away. * * * From doomed pirates to mischievous soldiers to spectral nuns, this collection of 38 spine-chilling tales features famous spirits from St. Augustine's legendary paranormal past. These stories are set in the city's iconic cemeteries, courtyards, and houses, including many sites along St. George Street, one of the oldest streets in the United States. Here you will find the exorcism of evil spirits from a man who became the city's mayor; the head of a Seminole warrior rising like the moon above the Castillo de San Marcos; restless ghosts lurking in hallways; eerie lights inside a mausoleum; a bishop's exploding casket; and a lighthouse keeper whose voice can still be heard in the wind.Today, visitors flock to the beachside city to enjoy spooky ghost tours and stay in haunted bed-and-breakfast inns. The stories they hear capture the rich history of the city and those who have inhabited it. St. Augustine's ghosts have deep roots in Spanish lore dating back to the founding of the city in 1565 and in the culture of immigrants from the Mediterranean island of Minorca who were brought to Florida as indentured servants in 1768. Retelling the most mysterious encounters and sightings that have been passed down for generations among residents of St. Augustine, Karen Harvey invites you to explore the quaint brick streets of the nation's oldest city for yourself. Who knows what you might discover?

A compelling investigation into supernatural events and local lore on Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island is known worldwide for its arresting natural beauty, but those who live here know that it is also imbued with a palpable supernatural energy. Researcher Shanon Sinn found his curiosity piqued by stories of mysterious sightings on the island—ghosts, sasquatches, sea serpents—but he was disappointed in the sensational and sometimes disrespectful way they were being retold or revised. Acting on his desire to transform these stories from unsubstantiated gossip to thoroughly researched accounts, Sinn uncovered fascinating details, identified historical inconsistencies, and now retells these encounters as accurately as possible. Investigating 25 spellbinding tales that wind their way from the south end of the island to the north, Sinn explored hauntings in cities, in the forest, and on isolated logging roads. In addition to visiting castles, inns, and cemeteries, he followed the trail of spirits glimpsed on mountaintops, beaches, and water, and visited Heriot Bay Inn on Quadra Island and the Schooner Restaurant in Tofino to personally scrutinize reports of hauntings. Featuring First Nations stories from each of the three Indigenous groups who call Vancouver Island home—the Coast Salish, the Nuu-chah-nulth, and the Kwakwaka’wakw—the book includes an interview with Hereditary Chief James Swan of Ahousaht.
