Tarot cards have been around since the Renaissance and have become increasingly popular in recent years, often due to their prevalence in popular culture. While Tarot means many different things to many different people, the cards somehow strike universal chords that can resonate through popular culture in the contexts of art, television, movies, even comic books. The symbolism within the cards, and the cards as symbols themselves, make Tarot an excellent device for the media of popular culture in numerous ways. They make horror movies scarier. They make paintings more provocative. They provide illustrative structure to comics and can establish the traits of television characters. The Cards: The Evolution and Power of Tarot begins with an extensive review of the history of Tarot from its roots as a game to its supposed connection to ancient Egyptian magic, through its place in secret societies, and to its current use in meditation and psychology. This section ends with an examination of the people who make up today’s tarot community. Then, specific areas of popular culture—art, television, movies, and comics—are each given a chapter in which to survey the use of Tarot. In this section, author Patrick Maille analyzes such works as Deadpool, Books of Magic by Neil Gaiman, Disney's Haunted Mansion, Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, The Andy Griffith Show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and King of the Hill. The cards are evocative images in their own right, but the mystical fascination they inspire makes them a fantastic tool to be used in our favorite shows and stories.

The Sun and Moon Tarot follows the traditional structure of Crowley Thoth Tarot. The Minor Arcana features Crowley's key words at the top of the cards, with the card titles and numbering at the bottom. Major Arcana cards show the associated Hebrew letter in the artwork. Sun and Moon Tarot is a multi-cultural tarot deck with symbolism borrowed from Hinduism, yoga, ancient Egyptian and classical Greek mythology, the I Ching, and Runes. The instruction booklet includes astrological associations and explanation of the Hebrew letters, as well as the card interpretations. This pocket-sized deck, presented in a tin, features the black borders originally designed by the artist.

Mastering Fear analyzes horror as play and examines what functions horror has and why it is adaptive and beneficial for audiences. It takes a biocultural approach, and focusing on emotions, gender, and play, it argues we play with fiction horror. In horror we engage not only with the negative emotions of fear and disgust, but with a wide range of emotions, both positive and negative. The book lays out a new theory of horror and analyzes female protagonists in contemporary horror from child to teen, adult, middle age, and old age. Since the turn of the millennium, we have seen a new generation of female protagonists in horror. There are feisty teens in The Vampire Diaries (2009–2017), troubled mothers in The Babadook (2014), and struggling women in the New French extremity with Martyrs (2008) and Inside (2007). At the fuzzy edges of the genre are dramas like Pan's Labyrinth (2006) and Black Swan (2010), and middle-age women are now protagonists with Carol in The Walking Dead (2010–) and Jessica Lange's characters in American Horror Story (2011–). Horror is not just for men, but also for women, and not just for the young, but for audiences of all ages.

There are unseen Otherworlds overlapping our own, populated by gods and goddesses, nature spirits, and elementals--the conscious embodiments of the natural forces and energies responsible for the functioning of the universe. For the Pagan, everything has a soul or spiritual essence. This deck is based on the Pagan worldview, its symbols, and teachings, and offers 78 beautiful cards featuring gods and goddesses. An accompanying, easy-to-understand guide tells the story of the Fool as he journeys through the Minor and Major Arcanas, encountering the forces that shape him and each one of us. The myths of the gods create links between cards, between the Majors and Minors, and between the inner and outer paths we walk. This Pagan system of divination can initiate you into the realities of your own psyche and become your guide to spiritual enlightenment.

Hollywood film directors are some of the world' most powerful storytellers, shaping the fantasies and aspirations of people around the globe. Since the 1960s, African Americans have increasingly joined their ranks, bringing fresh insights to movie characterizations, plots, and themes and depicting areas of African American culture that were previously absent from mainstream films. Today, black directors are making films in all popular genres, while inventing new ones to speak directly from and to the black experience. This book offers a first comprehensive look at the work of black directors in Hollywood, from pioneers such as Gordon Parks, Melvin Van Peebles, and Ossie Davis to current talents including Spike Lee, John Singleton, Kasi Lemmons, and Carl Franklin. Discussing 67 individuals and over 135 films, Melvin Donalson thoroughly explores how black directors' storytelling skills and film techniques have widened both the thematic focus and visual style of American cinema. Assessing the meanings and messages in their films, he convincingly demonstrates that black directors are balancing Hollywood' demand for box office success with artistic achievement and responsibility to ethnic, cultural, and gender issues.

Filled with humor, friendship, and middle school antics, the Confidentially Yours series—about a group of kids who run their school newspaper’s advice column—continues on in its fifth installment. Perfect for fans of the Cupcake Diaries or Candy Apple books. Brooke Jacobs never considered herself to be the superstitious type. But after she and her friends visit a psychic who tells Brooke she’s in for some bad luck, the panic sets in. And when Brooke hurts her arm, gets into a major fight with her boyfriend, and turns into a total klutz in soccer, she’s convinced her misfortune is here to stay. To make matters worse, the Lincoln Log—the newspaper where she and her best friends write their advice column—is competing in an important contest. Brooke, Vanessa, Heather, Tim, and the rest of the team need to put together their best issue yet. There’s no time for bad luck . . . but that’s all Brooke seems to have. Not wanting to let everyone down, Brooke must decide, once and for all, who’s in charge of her life: a silly superstition or herself. And she better find out fast, because bad luck or not, the contest must go on.

Strange Odyssey covers the spectrum of the spiritual world, including conversations with guides, healing and powerful prayers, inexplicable occurrences, and the releasing of spirits.
